Biography
Xiaochang C. Wang is a professor at the School of Environmental and Municipal Engineering, Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, Xi’an, China and currently acts as Chief Technology Officer of the International Forum of Water Sustainability. As he obtained PhD of engineering from Hokkaido University, Japan and had worked internationally before returned to China in 1998, he speaks Chinese, Japanese, and English.
He has long experiences of working in water sectors for engineering, research, education, and administration. From 2003 to 2014 he was Vice President of his university and has served long as board member of China Urban Water Association, and Water Industry Society under the China Civil Engineering Society, and Vice Chairman of Environmental Education Committee under the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences.
He joined International Water Supply Association (IWSA) in 1993 and then transferred his membership to IWA when IWSA and IAWQ were merged. He has been active in IWA in the Steering Committee of Cities of the Future Program, and Alternative Water Resources (AWR) Cluster. He has been made effort in promoting IWA activities in China and works as Chair of AWR Custer – China Chapter. He also served in the Program Committee as a member for the IWA Lisbon Congress and Co-Chair for the IWA Brisbane Congress. He was nominated IWA Fellow in 2011 and IWA Distinguished Fellow in 2014. Since 2020 he worked as a member in the IWA Board of Directors.
Xiaochang’s early research interest was in drinking water purification and latter extended to wastewater treatment and reuse. In recent years, he has been engaged much in research work to develop alternative water resources for sustainable urban development and water environmental improvement. He authored 13 books or book chapters internationally and domestically, published over 250 papers in peer reviewed international journals (times cited > 8000, h-index = 42) and about 500 papers in domestic journals (times cited > 8000). He is also serving Elsevier as Co-Editor in Chief of Journal of Water Process Engineering (IF = 7.34 in 2021). He was appointed Honorary Professor in 2019 by University of Exeter, UK. He was also endorsed the qualification of Exceptional Talent by UK Home Office through the recommendation of Royal Academy of Engineering.
